Surrounded by communicators and communications
As I landed in LaGuardia and travelled from the airport across the 59th St. Bridge, I recognized clearly how appropriate it is to host the IABC World Conference here in Manhattan. We are entirely surrounded by communications in New York. Ads, billboards, lighted signs, flyers plastered to every square inch of space and completely inescapable. We often think of our modern age as the age of communication, but a walk around New York clearly demonstrates that the city was built on communication. The mail drop in our hotel proudly shows the name of the maker cast in bronze from the 1940s. The cornerstone of the buildings, the pipework, old telephone lines directly next to the cell towers. 8.245 million people, as of 2011, all laughing, loving, fighting, teaching, learning and just seeking to be heard. Even the taxi drivers communicate effectively with just strategic, liberal use of their horn. As I came to the Hilton yesterday evening to check out the tradeshow space and prepare for the show, there was an air of excitement and anticipation as we envisioned the space filled with professional communicators from around the world.
Later in the evening we had dinner at Tony’s DiNapoli for my wife’s birthday and then walked back to our hotel through Times Square. When daylight fades, the sidewalks fill up with tourists who are all snapping pictures of themselves with famous brands that then get posted, tweeted, and shared across the planet in a constant stream of communication.
How do we have a voice in this place? How do we have an appropriate voice in our own communities and companies?
ElevatePoint has come to New York to offer some sanity to the life of communication professionals through our ElevatePoint products. Our own story began with efforts to help corporate communications teams manage their work better, define and track their efforts, and accomplish better strategic planning. So many customers and communicators work in companies that leverage the SharePoint platform. We have seen many intranets that barely utilize the power of the SharePoint platform, and that have not realized the value they were hoping to from their investment and efforts. We have taken our experience and created products that refine communication processes in SharePoint as well as provide the user a much improved news experience on corporate intranet sites. Our solution starts by creating central communication taxonomy for news channels, regions/locations, departments, and tags, and then supporting that with good management processes, reporting and analytics for improved insight, and solid archive and search capabilities. Driving home good practices within communication teams through a tool ensures that companies truly drive home their values and culture and realize the ROI from their own communications.
We are having a great time in New York speaking with professional communicators. We are excited for all of you as you learn from great speakers and have an opportunity to connect with each other, and eventually to go back and improve how communication works within your organizations.
