Microsoft SharePoint is a very powerful and flexible platform that is used by companies worldwide to share information, collaborate across regions/ departments/teams, manage documents, and much more.
At the IABC conference in New York, a communicator who was interested in learning more about our ElevatePoint products approached our booth. When we mentioned that ElevatePoint products are built on SharePoint, her reaction was to gasp –- SharePoint!!
As we continued our discussion, we heard the same comments and frustrations we so often hear from customers running SharePoint. Her company recognized the potential of the platform, but when it actually came to successfully implementing something usable and valuable to her team and the organization as a whole, the end result didn’t match the vision. Her reaction to us was based on a feeling that SharePoint could’ve been valuable, but ended up just causing general frustration as well as friction with IT, to the point that it was at risk of being abandoned altogether.
The reasons for these types of results are many. Commonly, customers get SharePoint up and running but are then confused as to how to effectively leverage the capabilities. They simply don’t know what to do next. How can we make this platform truly work for us? How can we move beyond basic sites to enable our business to be more productive and efficient? How can we use the platform to more effectively communicate with different internal and external audiences? Another common theme is a level of disconnect between IT and the communication team. IT implements the solution and rolls it out. But without ongoing and clear engagement with other business stakeholders, they will lack understanding of the value and therefore adoption will suffer and true business enablement will not be achieved. This communicator described both challenges.
These kinds of challenges are exactly why we created ElevatePoint. ElevatePoint products are designed to improve upon the core capabilities of SharePoint through a set of products that easily and naturally integrate into the environment and provide immediate, targeted business value.
As we proceeded to demonstrate our communication planning and news management products, she quickly started to realize the difference between a standard (out-of-box) SharePoint environment and an environment with products that are built on SharePoint but optimized for business enablement. We hope to show many more communicators what can truly be done within SharePoint with the right solutions in place – solutions that were envisioned and designed specifically with their challenges in mind.
